When I think of my microwave, I think of it as a backup plan both for my leftover pizza and the last few sips of my morning coffee. I've used it in the past for cooking things like vegetables, but they always came out undercooked, overcooked, or just rubbery. I'd always wondered if I was underutilizing this appliance.

So when Anyday sent me a version of its complete cookware set that’s made specifically for the appliance I usually ignore — I was intrigued. I prepared myself (and my idle microwave) to finally give those vegetables a fair shot. And after a week or so of using the set, I can officially say I no longer look at my microwave the same way. In fact, I’m even going to cook holiday meals in it this year! And right now it’s on rare sale starting at $150 until November 12.

When I received the collection in October, I thought they looked just like ordinary food storage containers, but the lids are the differentiating factor here. They are designed to keep moisture locked in and let steam out, thanks to a silicone knob that lifts up and down. When lifted up, they function as vents to release excess steam, preventing any splatters from occurring. It turns out that it really works!

I really wanted to see if these delivered on the promise, so I was determined to try at least four of the brand’s already tested-out recipes. The first dish I made was the creamy corn spoonbread using the medium shallow dish, which holds up to 4 cups. All of the ingredients — the butter, the flour, and even the fresh corn kernels and sour cream — went straight into the bowl, which I loved since it meant less dishes to clean up. I popped the lid on with the vent open, placed it in the microwave for five minutes, and waited. The smell wafting from the microwave was amazing, and it was impressive how evenly and quickly this bowl cooked the spoonbread. And it was delicious. The spoonbread was moist and crumbly and the jalapenos added a touch of heat. This is definitely on my list to make during the holiday season.

The results were great so far but I still wanted to know what else they could do. So I used these for cacio e pepe mashed potatoes next, which cooked beautifully in the larger deep dish. The steamed vegetables were another success, though I approached this with trepidation due to the crunchy and mushy horrors of the past. Each piece of broccoli was cooked to perfection thanks to the bowl’s unique ability to capture just the right amount of steam and heat. I was thrilled to see that you can make desserts in these too, and made an apple crumble which took a little more prep time than the savory counterparts, though that’s to be expected with baking (even in the microwave).

Overall, these containers are genuinely easy to use and I found they can produce tasty dishes in the microwave, which was something I simply didn't think was possible. While it took a moment to figure out the perfect container size for my recipes, a little trial-and-error quickly resolved that issue. One drawback is that you don't get the browning you can get from using the oven, so if that's important to you for say, scalloped potatoes, you might want to reserve those recipes for the oven. It is worth noting that they are oven-safe (the bowl up to 500℉ and the lids up to 400℉), so it is possible to get that brown and bubbly top by placing it on an upper-rack in the middle, if you want to take the extra step.

Another thing I love about these dishes is that cleaning up is a breeze, as very few dishes and kitchen tools are used for a recipe. The dishes are dishwasher-safe, but I’ve found it easy to  hand wash the bowls and lids in warm, soapy water. They also stack neatly together, taking up very little space in my cupboard.

I own this all-black set, though you can shop the collection in kale, blueberry, and black sesameThe set includes one large deep dish, one large shallow dish, one medium deep dish, one medium shallow dish, and two small dishes made of sturdy frosted borosilicate glass, plus lids for each. While they are on the more expensive side ($150 for a set of six bowls and lids), I think they’re the perfect addition for anyone who needs a little extra help this holiday season.

If your microwave is sitting idle most of the time like mine was, try this Anyday cookware set. It makes whipping up dishes in the microwave easy and tasty, and I can’t wait to use the collection for Thanksgiving. Shop the set on sale right now for as low as $150 now, and thank me later.
