Why not both?

Remember just the other day when we explained why McDonald’s never has onion rings on its menu? Turns out that’s OK, because Burger King has always had them hot and ready. But now, the side is getting an upgrade.

On Wednesday, Burger King announced its latest side option — “Have-sies.” Just as the name implies, have-sies combines fries and onion rings into one delicious package, so you never have to pick between the two options again.

“Burger King is all about letting guests ‘have it their way,’ and while the flame-grilled Whopper sandwich is often the star of the show, that also includes side options when ordering combo meals,” Pat O’Toole, the chief marketing officer of Burger King North America, shared in a statement. “We know guests love our onion rings that they can’t get anywhere else, but it’s hard to give up on the classic French fry – so we’re excited to offer both in true BK fashion.”

As Today explained, the side was originally tested in various markets in Florida under the name “Fries n’ Rings” and appears to have been popular enough to make the national cut. Of course, before this, guests could always just order a side of fries and a side of onion rings to make their own combination or even ask nicely for a little combo if they happened to run into a friendly Burger King worker. But this just makes the entire process more official.

Have-sies will be available starting October 12 in small, medium, and large sizes. It will also be made available as part of Burger King’s combo meals so guests can have a side to “suit their tastes and satisfy their cravings.”

As for McDonald’s, Mike Haracz, a former Manager of Culinary Innovation at the chain's headquarters, shared in a TikTok that onion rings are just far too inefficient for McDonald’s to produce.

“[With onion rings] they would be selling a much less efficient, much less profitable item for them,” he said. “Would you be willing to pay a lot more for your side of onion rings [...] They would probably have to charge you an extra dollar or something even more because they’re not as efficient at making onion rings as they are with French fries.”

Who knows,? Maybe this move by Burger King will change their minds.
